Sacraments: Anointing of the Sick

Anointing of the Sick

The Catholic Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick (formerly known as Last Rites or Extreme Unction) is a ritual of healing appropriate not only for physical but also for mental and spiritual sickness. It is scheduled twice a year in the Fall and Spring at St. Jane's. Please notify the parish office when a parishioner is hospitalized or unable to attend Mass by calling 410-255-4646.

Biblical references:

James 5:14-15
Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Mk 6:12-13
So they went out and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them.

Acts 9:17-18

So Ananias went and entered the house; laying his hands on him, he said, "Saul, my brother, the Lord has sent me, Jesus who appeared to you on the way by which you came, that you may regain your sight and be filled with the holy Spirit." Immediately things like scales fell from his eyes and he regained his sight. He got up and was baptized…

“If when we are ill, our recovery will contribute to the glory of God and the good of our soul, He who healed so many when He was on earth, will certainly heal us. If, on the contrary, the illness is more advantageous to us, He will instead give us the strength to suffer.”

St. John Vianney
(Curé d'Ars)
